Feng Shui in Palliative Care: Creating a Healing and Supportive Environment
Some time ago, I was commissioned to redesign a palliative care ward – a place where seriously ill patients and their families spend valuable time together during the final stages of life. The goal of this holistic interior design project was to create a warm, supportive, and healing environment that felt less like a hospital and more like a place of comfort, peace, and well-being.
Transforming a Hospital Space into a Place of Well-Being
The first phase of the project focused on redesigning two key areas. One of them was the kitchen and lounge area – a shared space for patients, relatives, and healthcare staff.
Before the renovation, the room felt dark, outdated, and disconnected. The existing design lacked harmony, the kitchen no longer met functional requirements, and the space was rarely used. From a Feng Shui perspective, the room was dominated by the Earth element in its stagnant and imbalanced form, resulting in low energy, little movement, and an uninspiring atmosphere.
A New Design Concept Inspired by a Beach Cafè
The new interior design concept aimed to completely transform the energy and functionality of the room. The vision was to create a bright, welcoming space inspired by the relaxed atmosphere of a beach cafè.
Warm colours, natural materials, and carefully selected design elements were introduced to encourage connection, relaxation, and emotional comfort. The Feng Shui design principles focused on improving energy flow, increasing lightness, and creating a sense of warmth and vitality.
At the same time, the kitchen was redesigned to provide significantly more storage space and improved functionality for everyday use.
Healing Spaces Through Feng Shui and Interior Design
Research shows that thoughtfully designed healthcare environments can positively influence emotional well-being and quality of life. In palliative care settings, where comfort, dignity, and human connection are essential, the physical environment plays a particularly important role.
By combining Feng Shui principles with modern healthcare interior design, this previously underused room was transformed into a vibrant gathering place that supports patients, families, and staff alike.
Take a look at the transformation and see how intentional design can create a space that nurtures comfort, connection, and peace (see pictures above).
The Impact of Feng Shui on Well-Being in Healthcare Spaces
In Feng Shui, it is not enough to simply introduce new colours, furniture, or decorative elements. The key lies in placing the right element in the right direction to support both the intended purpose of the room and the overall energetic balance of the entire ward.
Every design decision in this palliative care renovation was carefully considered to create a harmonious flow of energy, enhance comfort, and support emotional well-being for patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals alike.
Today, the redesigned kitchen and lounge area has become one of the most frequently used spaces on the ward. Patients, family members, and staff use it daily to relax, enjoy a coffee, share conversations, eat together, and take a moment away from the challenges of everyday hospital life.
The transformation demonstrates how Feng Shui interior design can positively influence the atmosphere of a space. The sense of balance, warmth, and well-being is immediately noticeable and has significantly increased the use of the room.
Creating Healing Environments Through Thoughtful Design
A well-designed healthcare environment does more than look attractive - it supports human connection, emotional comfort, and a sense of security. This is particularly important in palliative care, where every detail contributes to quality of life.
In the next article, I will introduce the second phase of this transformation project. The former meeting room was completely redesigned and converted into a functional and harmonious handover room for shift staff, improving communication, focus, and workplace well-being.
Stay tuned to discover the next transformation and learn how Feng Shui can enhance healthcare environments, staff well-being and patient experience.
